Get involved

Three ways to help. All of them count.

Give us the hardware, fund the bench it gets fixed on, or stand at the table and show a kid which screw to turn.

A long table of sorted, labelled bins holding reclaimed computer parts and cables ready for the next workshop.

Option one

Donate hardware

E-waste is any electronic product that's unwanted, broken, or near the end of its useful life. Most of what we receive still has years left in it and what doesn't becomes teaching material.

We happily take these

All computers, working or not

  • Laptops & desktops
  • Servers
  • Motherboards
  • RAM
  • CPUs
  • Flat-screen monitors
  • Keyboards & mice
  • Webcams
  • Computer speakers
  • DVD & VHS players
  • Radios
  • Cell phones
  • Walkmen & CD players
  • Tablets
  • Software
  • Video game consoles
  • Ink & toner cartridges (full or empty)

Something not on the list? Ask us — service@ewastegang.org

Not free of charge

Tube/CRT monitors, televisions, and batteries cost money to process safely, so we can't take them for free. Contact us and we'll tell you what's involved or point you somewhere that can help.

And to be clear: we do not buy e-waste.

Three ways to get it to us

  • Bring it to any event. Every workshop we run doubles as a drop-off point. No appointment needed.
  • Book a pickup. We run monthly and bi-monthly collection routes around Norristown. Email us to get on one.
  • Bulk clear-out. Offices, schools and churches replacing a fleet: tell us the count and we'll arrange a dedicated pickup.

A permanent drop-off location is in the works.

Wipe your device before you hand it over

We wipe every drive we receive to NSA/DoD-compliant standards, but you should always erase your own data first. It takes a few minutes.

Can't figure it out? Bring the device to a Wipe It Before You Ditch It session and we'll do it with you. We also offer certified data destruction at $10 per hard drive — see services.

Option two

Fund the workbench

Hardware arrives free. Everything around it doesn't. Money goes to replacement parts, tools, safety gear, table covering, lab coats for students, transport for pickups, and the workspace where machines get repaired between sessions.

In-kind donations

Non-cash gifts: goods, professional services, or paying one of our bills directly. Tools, storage bins, printing and venue time all help.

Don't know what your donation is worth? We'll calculate it for you.

Any donation valued at $250 or more will receive a written acknowledgement, as long as we have a return address or email unless you'd rather we didn't send one. If you don't know the value of an in-kind donation, we'll calculate it for you.

Option three

Volunteer or partner with us

Workshops run on people. You don't need to be an engineer, you need to be patient and willing to say "let's find out" when a kid asks you something.

For individuals

Be a mentor

Stand at a table for two hours and help four or five students through a teardown. We train you on the session beforehand. IT background welcome but not required.

Also useful: repair techs, drivers for pickup runs, photographers, and anyone comfortable with grant writing or bookkeeping.

For venues

Give us a room

Schools, libraries, churches, rec centres and makerspaces: if you have tables that can get messy and a few hours on a weekend, we'll bring the rest.

For businesses

Sponsor a session

Local sponsors cover the consumables for a full workshop, and IT departments cycling out equipment give us our best supply of donated machines. Both are genuinely valuable to us.
